Lady Falcons headed to the Big Dance!
Saint Thomas defeats the Lafayette Christian Lady Knights 13-3 to earn a trip to the final four at Sulphur.

HAMMOND, LA—The Saint Thomas Aquinas Lady Falcon Softball team clinched a berth to the LHSAA State Softball Tournament after defeating the Lafayette Christian Lady Knights 13-3 in a Division III state quarterfinal playoff played at Falcon Field. The contest went just five innings because of the mercy rule that ended in style with junior Morgan Gras stroking a two-run homer to give the Lady Falcons a double-digit lead in the bottom of the fifth frame.
The number two-seeded Lady Falcons (19-6) advance to the Division III semifinals that begin on Friday, April 30 at Frasch Park in Sulphur, La. They will play the winner between No. 3 Holy Savior/No. 6 Northlake Christian. The semifinal winner will play on Saturday, May 1st for the Division III State Championship.
This will mark the first time since the 2017 campaign that the Lady Falcons made the trek to Sulphur. “This is exciting especially after what happened last year,” said STA coach Randy Carter. “Last year was tough. Tough for a lot of teams because of the pandemic, but for this particular group and the seniors it was something that they really wanted achieve the goal of going to the State Tournament. The team has bought into the philosophy and its a big deal to go to Sulphur. They are truly excited for this opportunity and to have a chance to win a state title.”
The Lady Falcons made a statement at the beginning of the game by exploding for nine runs in the first inning to set the tone. Lafayette Christian, who came into the contest as the number seven seed could not get the timely hits when needed. “We did a good job of putting the ball in play,” said Lafayette Christian coach Taylor Lollis. “We just couldn't get the ball into the gaps and we couldn't string hits together.”
Saint Thomas got on the scoreboard with nine runs in the first inning when Morgan Gras delivered a RBI single to and later senior Kelsey Deakie had a RBI bunt single. Junior Madison Fundliing and senior Emily Wells had back-to-back two-run RBI doubles and senior Krislyn Dapprich had a RBI double to centerfield. A throwing error by Lafayette Christian plated the final run.
The Knights cut into the deficit with a RBI single to centerfield in the second inning to make it 9-1. The Lady Falcons answered with a RBI double by Deakie in the bottom of the frame to give STA a 10-1 advantage. Lafayette Christian scored a pair of runs in the third on a two-run RBI single to left field to trail 10-3. Saint Thomas responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double by junor Ali Girard to centerfield to make it 11-3
The Lady Falcons threatened in the fifth inning when senior Brilee Broussard led off the frame with a base hit and then later Gras hammered a two-run homer to centerfield to make the final score 13-3. Deakie took the mound win striking out seven, walked one after facing 26 batters at the plate. STA outhit Lafayette Christian 17-7 at the plate. Multiple hitters for the Lady Falcons included Brilee Broussard and Morgan Gras each going 3-for-4. Emily Hoover and Kristlynn Dapprich were each 2-for-4. Kelsey Deakie and Madison Funding were each 2-for-3
“It was a tough loss,” said Lollis. “We have a lot of young players. They got on top early which kind of set us down. I’m proud of the girls on the way they competed. We got on base, but that was a good pitcher we faced.”
“This was a great win for us,” Carter said. “The girls came out today and were pumped. Kelsey did a terrific job on the mound. Our bats came alive in the first inning. It feels great. This victory gets us where we want to go and that's Sulphur.”
